Phoenix gran robbed, strangled

Police are investigating the robbery and murder of a 70-year-old grandmother who was found dead on the bed of her Phoenix home yesterday.

Rookmoney Moodley was found strangled with a belt tied around her neck in Esselen Crescent on Wednesday afternoon.
Her house was ransacked and the safe was missing.

A private security company reported that Moodley’s domestic worker had been seen leaving her residence at about 9:30am on Wednesday.

Her body was only discovered at about 3:30pm.

Prem Balram of Reaction Unit South Africa said a transporter arrived at the residence to drop off Moodley’ grandchild after school.

“When the child failed to gain entry to the home, the transporter called a family member who arrived and found the front door unlocked. Upon entering the residence, he found the deceased’s body.”

Balram said a door leading into one of the bedrooms had been forced open.

“A safe had been stolen and a television was found disconnected. The domestic worker has not been located.”

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said no arrests have been made.
